A Senior's Guide to Using Google Maps

Gone are the days of struggling to fold massive paper road maps or squinting at small printed directions while driving. Google Maps has revolutionized how we travel, allowing us to find restaurants, check local traffic, and get voice-guided turn-by-turn directions completely for free.

However, because Google Maps has so many features, the screen can look cluttered and confusing. You might worry about pressing the wrong button and getting lost or draining your mobile data plan.

In this guide, we will break down the essential features of Google Maps, teaching you how to search for a location, start voice navigation, and even save your home address so you can always find your way back.

Step 1: Understand the Map Screen

When you first open Google Maps, you will see your current location represented by a blue dot. * The Blue Dot: Indicates where you are standing right now. * The Direction Beam: The light blue shadow pointing out from the dot shows which direction you are facing. * Search Bar: At the very top, you will see a box that says "Search here." This is where you will type where you want to go.

Step 2: How to Search for a Destination

You do not need to know the exact address of where you want to go. Google Maps works like a normal search engine.

  1. Tap the Search Bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Type a name, such as St. Jude Hospital, Target near me, or even Italian restaurant.
  3. Google will display a list of matches. Tap on the correct location from the list.
  4. A red pin will drop on the map, and a panel will slide up from the bottom showing the address, photos, phone number, and opening hours.

Step 3: Get Directions and Start Voice Navigation

Once you have selected your destination, you can see the route and start voice navigation:

  1. Tap the blue Directions button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select your travel method by tapping the icons at the top:
    • 🚗 Car (Driving)
    • 🚌 Transit (Bus or Train)
    • 🚶 Walking (Walk route)
  3. Google will show you the fastest route in blue, along with alternative routes in grey.
  4. Tap the blue Start button (with a green arrow icon) at the bottom. The view will tilt, and a friendly voice will say, "Head north toward..." to guide you.
How to Mute or Unmute the Voice: If the voice guidance is distracting or too quiet, look for the speaker icon on the right side of the screen during navigation. Tap it to toggle between "Muted" (speaker with a slash), "Alerts Only" (speaker with an exclamation mark), and "Sound On" (normal speaker).

Step 4: Save Your "Home" Address for One-Click Navigation

To avoid typing your address every time you want to go home, you can save it permanently:

  1. Tap the Saved tab (the bookmark flag icon) at the bottom center of the screen.
  2. Under "Your lists," tap Labeled.
  3. Tap Home and type your home address.
  4. Now, whenever you are out, you can simply tap the search bar and click the Home shortcut button to get instant directions home.

A Safety Tip for Traveling

Safety Warning: Never try to type a new address or change settings in Google Maps while your car is moving. If you need to change your route, pull over safely into a parking lot or gas station, make the adjustments, and then resume driving.

The Bottom Line

Google Maps is like having a personal co-pilot in your pocket. By learning how to search, start voice guidance, adjust the volume, and save your home address, you can explore new towns, find local shops, and travel with peace of mind. Open the app today and practice searching for a local library or grocery store to get comfortable before your next big trip!

How to Cancel Unwanted Phone Subscriptions

Have you ever looked at your bank statement and noticed a small, recurring charge for an app or service you don’t remember signing up for? It is incredibly common. Many modern smartphone apps lure users in with a "free trial."
