How to Make Your Smartphone Screen Easier to Read: A Step-by-Step Font Guide

As we get older, our eyes naturally start to fatigue a bit faster, and those tiny default font sizes on our smartphones can become a daily source of frustration. You shouldn't have to squint or hold your phone at arm's length just to read a text message from a family member or check a recipe online.

Fortunately, both Apple (iOS) and Android (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.) devices have excellent built-in accessibility features designed to make text larger, bolder, and much easier to read.

In this guide, we will walk you through the exact steps to increase the font size, make text bold, and adjust contrast on your phone so you can enjoy a strain-free mobile experience.

Part 1: How to Increase Font Size on an iPhone (iOS)

Apple provides a feature called "Dynamic Type" which allows you to change the font size not only for Apple's built-in apps (like Messages, Mail, and Settings) but also for many third-party apps (like Facebook or WhatsApp).

Step 1: Adjust the Standard Text Size

  1. Find and tap the Settings app (the grey icon with gears).
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap Text Size.
  4. You will see a slider at the bottom of the screen. Drag the slider to the right to make the text larger. You will see a live preview of the text size change above the slider.

Step 2: Access "Larger Accessibility Sizes" (For even bigger text)

Tip for Maximum Visibility: If the maximum standard size isn't large enough, Apple offers an extra-large option hidden in the Accessibility menu:
  1. Open Settings and tap on Accessibility (the blue icon with a white stick figure).
  2. Tap on Display & Text Size.
  3. Tap Larger Text.
  4. Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes by tapping the switch (it will turn green).
  5. Use the slider at the bottom to adjust the font size to your preferred comfort level.

Step 3: Enable Bold Text

Making the text thicker can significantly improve readability:

  1. In the Accessibility ➡️ Display & Text Size menu, find Bold Text.
  2. Toggle the switch to On (green). Your phone will instantly change all text to a bolder, more defined weight.

Part 2: How to Increase Font Size on Android (Samsung Galaxy)

Samsung phones run on a version of Android called One UI, which makes adjusting font sizes and styles very straightforward.

Step 1: Change Font Size and Style

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification panel, and tap the Settings icon (the gear in the top right corner).
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display.
  3. Tap on Font size and style.
  4. Use the Font size slider at the bottom of the screen. Drag it to the right to make the text larger.
  5. (Optional) Toggle the switch for Bold font to make the text thicker and more defined.
  6. (Optional) You can also tap Font style to choose a different font. We recommend keeping it on "Default" or selecting "SamsungOne" as they are designed for clean readability.

Step 2: Use "High Contrast Fonts"

If you find that light-colored text on light backgrounds is hard to distinguish, Android has a feature to outline letters:

  1. Go back to the main Settings menu and tap on Accessibility.
  2. Tap on Visibility enhancements.
  3. Toggle on High contrast fonts. This adds a crisp, dark border around letters, making them stand out against bright backgrounds.

Part 3: Helpful Bonus Tips for Maximum Eye Comfort

Increasing the text size is only half the battle. Here are three additional settings that can dramatically reduce eye strain:

1. Adjust Screen Zoom (Android & iPhone)

Sometimes it is not just the text that is too small, but also the buttons, icons, and chat bubbles.

  • On iPhone: Go to Settings ➡️ Display & Brightness ➡️ scroll to the bottom and tap Display Zoom ➡️ select Larger Text.
  • On Android: Go to **Settings** ➡️ Display ➡️ Screen zoom ➡️ use the slider to zoom in on all interface elements.

2. Enable "Auto-Brightness" or "Eye Comfort Shield"

Harsh blue light, especially in the evening, can irritate mature eyes.

  • Eye Comfort Shield (Android) / Night Shift (iPhone): These features warm up the colors of your display, reducing blue light. You can find these settings under the Display menu on both platforms. Turn them on to give your eyes a rest, especially before bed.

3. Keep Your Screen Clean

It sounds simple, but a buildup of fingerprints and dust scatters light and reduces screen contrast, making text harder to read. Keep a microfiber cloth handy and wipe your screen down once a day.

Take It One Step at a Time

Don't feel pressured to get all the settings perfect on your first try. Open your settings, adjust the slider a little bit, and use your phone for a day or two. If you still find yourself squinting, go back in and make it a step larger.

Our phones are meant to make our lives easier, not harder. By taking control of your screen settings, you can enjoy staying in touch with your loved ones without the headache!

How to Find and Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions on Your Smartphone

Have you ever looked at your bank statement and noticed a small, recurring charge for an app or service you don’t remember signing up for? It is incredibly common. Many modern smartphone apps lure users in with a "free trial." Once the trial ends (often in just 3 or 7 days), the app automatically starts charging your credit card on file, sometimes $5, $10, or even $15 every month. Because these charges are billed directly through your Apple or Google account rather than the app itself, canceling them requires going into your phone's main settings. In this guide, we will show you exactly how to find, manage, and cancel these hidden subscriptions on both iPhone and Android devices. Part 1: How to Cancel Subscriptions on an iPhone (iOS) Apple manages all subscriptions purchased through the App Store in one centralized location on your phone.
